ANOTHER PROJECT ON THAR COAL STARTS POWER GENERATION
While accomplishing the vision of the Government of Pakistan of encouraging indigenous Thar coal for power generation, the Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) proudly announce synchronization of another Thar coal based 330 MW ThalNova power plant to the national grid on 30th December 2022. With such momentous achievement, ThalNova plant has become the second Thar coal based power plant joining the national grid within the month of December. Earlier, the 1,320 MW Thar coal based Shanghai power plant successfully achieved this milestone with effect from 6th December 2022.
With this latest addition, total production of electricity from five Thar coal based power generation plants has reached to 3,300 MW, all facilitated by PPIB. Earlier, four projects totaling 2,970 MW were completed under PPIB’s facilitation which include 660 MW Engro, 660 MW Lucky, 330 MW Thar Energy and 1,320 MW Shanghai.
Sponsored by a joint venture comprising HUBCO, Thal Limited, Novatex Limited, China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC), and Descon with 497.7 million US Dollars investment, the ThalNova Power is a mine-mouth lignite-fired power plant at Thar Coal Block II Sindh and is a part of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The plant is expected to join the club of commissioned IPPs during the month of January 2023.
