At the Conference on Competitive Electricity Market in Pakistan, I shared why the Competitive Trading Bilateral Contract Market (CTBCM) is a game-changer:
From a single-buyer system to a competitive wholesale market — this shift can unlock:
• Cheaper power for industry
• Private investment inflows
• Energy security & export competitiveness
• More renewables in our energy mix
We’re moving forward:
• Dry Test Run completed
• ISMO operational
• 800 MW open access allocation
• PPIB ready for competitive procurement as Independent Auction Administrator (IAA)
Challenges remain — from regulatory readiness to grid upgrades — but the direction is clear. A transparent, efficient, and competitive electricity market will be a win-win for Pakistan’s economy, industry, and climate goals.
The journey to a competitive electricity market will be complex — but the rewards for Pakistan’s economy, industry, and environment are immense. Now is the time to align vision with execution.
