Suki Kinari Hydropower Project Celebrates First Anniversary
The first anniversary of the successful commercial operation of the 884 MW Suki Kinari Hydropower Project, one of the flagship energy projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) was commemorated on 15th September 2025, in Serena Hotel, Islamabad.
A special event was held in Islamabad to mark this significant milestone in Pakistan’s clean energy journey. The celebration was graced by Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Prof. Ahsan Iqbal Chaudhary, Managing Director PPIB, Mr. Shah Jahan Mirza, Mr. Shi Yuanqiang, Chargé d’Affaires at the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad while key stakeholders, government officials, and representatives from the project company and energy sector also participated.
The Honorable Minister highlighted how this milestone under CPEC is powering Pakistan’s growth, strengthening energy security, and transforming Pakistan's development journey. He emphasized that CPEC has been instrumental in turning strategic visions into tangible progress, providing energy, infrastructure, and economic opportunities that uplift millions of lives. Also speaking at the event, Mr. Shah Jahan Mirza, while highlighting key features of the Suki Kinari project, emphasized the strategic importance of hydropower in Pakistan’s energy mix.
Since its commencement of commercial operations on September 14, 2024, the Suki Kinari Hydropower Station has generated 3 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean electricity. This has not only strengthened Pakistan’s energy supply but also reduced dependence on imported fossil fuels, in line with the government’s push for renewable energy and sustainable development. As one of the largest hydropower projects under CPEC’s energy cooperation portfolio, it plays a crucial role in balancing Pakistan’s energy mix, lowering costs, and advancing sustainable development. In addition to energy generation, the project has significantly contributed to socio-economic development in local communities. During peak construction, it created more than 6,000 jobs, raised household incomes, and implemented wide-ranging social responsibility programs.
