CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
(
Raja Pervez Ashraf, Federal Minister for
Water and Power )
Almighty God has blessed Pakistan with an enormous wealth of Water, Coal and
Gas and it can become an energy corridor for the region.
Today Pakistan is confronted with a number
of internal and external challenges
and shortfall in electricity is one
of these the effects of which are being directly felt by our economy. There
is no doubt that if untapped reserves of Coal and Hydropower are exploited
expeditiously, Pakistan can overcome the shortfall and achieve self reliance
in power generation. However, to exploit these resources, heavy investments
are required, which the lean economy of Pakistan cannot afford without
private sector’s participation. The Private Power and Infrastructure Board
(PPIB), created in 1994 is the dedicated interface of the Government of
Pakistan for this purpose, and provides one-window facility to investors in
the private power sector.
The present Government soon after coming
into power has taken immediate steps to alleviate the power shortages prevailing
in the country in the shortest possible time period to eliminate load-shedding
from the country. A number of medium and long term projects, both in public and
private sector, are in the pipeline which will provide electricity to the
national grid in the coming years
While
efforts to induct additional generation capacity into the system are on, and
Insha Allah we will be eliminating the menace of load-shedding, during this
hour of trial we need unity and tolerance amongst our ranks and we need to
adopt electricity conservation measures to contribute towards minimizing
un-necessary use of electricity.
We welcome international power companies
to come forward and work with us for the mutual benefit of these companies and
the people of Pakistan.
